Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [2/6/19]

Predictably, people were unable to successfully live up to the standards set in the Ten Commandments… and neither are we.  They [and we] needed someone to step in and accept responsibility for the mistakes that were made.  They [we] simply were not able.  Well, God’s amazing grace prevailed.  Christ stepped in, assumed responsibility, we were justified, and our relationship to God was restored. AMEN!

Verses: Romans 5:18-19 (NIV)
Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

Verses: Romans 5:20-21 (NIV)
The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayer, Praise, & Promises Feb. 5, 2019

Our praises should rise to God as the sweet aroma of Christ. Let us love as Christ loved and may it be pleasing to the Father. (Inspired by 2 Corinthians 2:15)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [2/5/19]

Today’s portion of Scripture reminds us that Adam [and Eve] had but one responsibility; to be obedient to God.  He [they], however, chose to be disobedient and went against God’s plan for living life.  There were some obvious consequences for humanity because of this disobedience.  To clarify expectations, God delivered the law, the Ten Commandments, to Moses.  The standard had been set.  But, is there anyone out there who thinks mankind would be any better at following ten rules over the initial one that was made that we refused to keep?  I suspect there is much more to this story.

Verses: Romans 5:12-13 (NIV)
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—
To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [2/4/19]

Think about it.  Today’s verse may make you wonder if you would be willing to die for someone or not.  For most of us, it is not an easy answer.  We probably have lots of if this, if that, under certain conditions; all questions that we would want answered before a decision would be made.  Even if we think we would be willing to die for someone, would we would really be able to do such a thing?  Hopefully we will never have to find out.  However, thankfully, Jesus was not only willing and able to do that for us, He did it.  Such a love, may we all know.  I am assuming He must have felt that what was at stake, our eternal life in relationship with God, was worth the sacrifice?  May we show our gratitude by continuing to follow Jesus.

Verses: Romans 5:6-8 (NIV)
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

River Run’s Community Crafters Group Assembled a Lap Afghan to Donate to Hospice

River Run’s Community Crafters group is making lap afghans.  A member of River Run made and donated some granny squares to the service project.   Another member crocheted the squares together and added a boarder, completing the lap afghan.   We plan to donate the lap afghans made to individuals who are in hospice care.  See the beautiful handiwork in the pictures below.

“What do you expect from a sermon?” – C10 [2/3/2019]

Today’s Passage:  Luke 4:21-30

Opening Prayer:  Father God, we all have filters that cloud our perceptions of people, things, and circumstances.  Things are not always as they seem.  We have learned in Scripture that God’s ways are not our ways.  May we have eyes to see, ears to hear, and words to speak the Truth.  May we seek to understand and grow in the wisdom that comes from a close relationship with You, through Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit.  In Jesus’ name, I pray.  Amen.

Opening Song:  Jeremy Camp “The Way”

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]:  “What do you expect from a sermon?”, by Will Willimon.  Will Willimon is a retired bishop in the United Methodist Church, a powerful preacher, and a prolific author.
“What do you expect from a sermon?”  It’s a question Will Willimon has asked many people through the years and he’s gotten a lot of interesting answers.  But if you had asked the people in Jesus’ hometown synagogue what they expected from a sermon no one would have said they expected to be reminded that God is God, and that if God chooses to save others before he saves his own that’s his prerogative.  Some sermons are not easy to hear.  Some preachers know that and preach them anyway.  Jesus was one of those preachers.

Closing Prayer:  Father God, I trust that those who know You have heard Your message today.  May we have the confidence to share Your Truth with those around us in such a way that they may find You.  Help us to remember what is important.  May we be allowed to share in the work of building Your Kingdom.  Where we are weak, may You give us Your strength.  Where we lack understanding, may You give us Your wisdom.  In the name of Jesus, I pray.

Epilogue: Ok, what is your story?  Now, go share the Good News!  Amen.

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [2/3/19]

Verses: Romans 5:1-5 (NIV)
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

So much of life can be a struggle or involve suffering.  You may have heard the extreme expression, “what doesn’t kill us will strengthen us.”  In a similar way, our suffering can grow our faith in God.  May we, through faith, experience God’s mercy and grace – receiving His peace amid the storms of life.

Prayer, Praise, & Promises Feb. 2, 2019

Father, help us to remember that love is an action. We say we “love” things from apples to zoos. Remind us that real love is seen, not in empty words, but in how we deal with others and what we are willing to sacrifice to help bear others’ burdens. Amen
