Prayer, Praise, & Promises Sept. 9, 2019

Goodness is love in action, love with its hand to the plow, love with its burden on its back, love following his footsteps who went about continually doing good. – James Hamilton

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [9/9/19]

Oh, to be blessed indeed…

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,  which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!  They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
Psalm 1 (NIV)

A Grain of Sand – The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost [9/8/19]

Today’s Passage:  Psalm 139

Opening Prayer:
Father God, May You “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”  Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)
In the name of Jesus, I pray.  Amen.

Opening Song: Gaither Vocal Band – Search Me, Lord (Live)

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]: A Grain of Sand – The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost [9/8/19] by Rev. Dr. Frank A. Thomas is a preacher, teacher, scholar, lecturer, author, and master coach, who currently serves as the Nettie Sweeney and Hugh Th. Miller Professor of Homiletics and Director of the Academy of Preaching and Celebration at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana.
“How precious to me are your thoughts, O God. How vast is the sum of them.  Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand on the seas. When I awake, O God, I am still with you.”
“Howard Thurman, the prolific African American preacher and mystic lived to be 81 years old and prayed Psalm 139 every day of his adult life. Could you pray Psalm 139 every day for the rest of your life. Could you pray any scripture or prayer every day for the rest of your life?”  Listen as Rev. Dr. Frank A. Thomas teaches us how we, too, can and should pray scripture for the rest of our lives.
“What is your one verse?”

Closing Song: Tauren Wells – Known (Official Lyric Video)

Closing Prayer:  Father God, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.  You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.   You discern my going out and my lying down you are  familiar with all my ways.   Before a word is on my tongue  you, Lord, know it completely.   You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.   Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.”  Psalm 139:1-6 (NIV)  May Your hand always be upon me.  May the Holy Spirit always guide me.  In Jesus’ holy name I pray.  Amen.

Epilogue: Casting Crowns – God of All My Days (Official Lyric Video)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [9/8/19]

May we follow Your commands…

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Deuteronomy 30:15-20 (NIV)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [9/7/19]

40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
Matthew 10:40-42 (NIV)

Prayer, Praise, & Promises Sept. 6, 2019

Whatever you’re dealing with, turn to Scripture. It’s not just a book; it’s the mind of God. Every decision you make should be checked with the Bible. The Bible puts your mind, your emotions, and your decision-making process in line with God’s will. – Luis Palau

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [9/6/19]

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
“‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
36     a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[a]

37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.
Matthew 10:34-39 (NIV)
