Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/29/19]

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days.

But as for me, I trust in you.
Psalm 55:22-23 (NIV)

Father God, may we trust in You for our safety and security.  In Jesus’ name, I pray.  Amen.

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]: Teach Us To Pray: The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost [7/28/19] by Jim Somerville, Pastor of Richmond’s First Baptist Church and Co-Founder of A Sermon for Every Sunday.
Are you satisfied with your prayer life? Would you be surprised to know that, according to one survey, very few Protestant ministers are satisfied with their personal prayer lives? Dr. Jim Somerville preaches a sermon from Luke 11:1-13, Luke’s version of the Lord’s Prayer. Somerville, when describing his own prayer life, said, “All I really needed [to make it better] was a decision, some discipline, and A Guide to Prayer.” Jesus gives his disciples a guide to prayer in today’s passage. Listen and learn more about the Lord’s Prayer and how it can guide the way we pray.

Closing Prayer:  Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread.   And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.   And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.  For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/28/19]

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.

Luke 11:1-4 (NIV)

May our prayers be sincere, simple, and direct.  May they focus upon the will of the Father, the sacrifice of the Son, and the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/27/19]

Getting through each day can take a lot of work.  It often seems like the work will never end.  Sometimes we can miss the point of life with all the busyness.  Take time to reassess priorities and revise plans and find a better balance between doing and being.

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42 (NIV)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/26/19]

We usually think that laws are made for people’s safety or to establish acceptable standards of behavior.  We believe if people abide by the laws, everyday living to go more smoothly and people will be treated more fairly.  However, what about the God’s laws?  Might they be established for similar reasons?  This passage indicates meditating on God’s laws and observing His commands will make us wiser, give us more insight, help us to understand things better, and teach us how to live.  Sweet!  Sounds like a plan!

97 Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.
98 Your commands are always with me
and make me wiser than my enemies.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.
100 I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts.
101 I have kept my feet from every evil path
so that I might obey your word.
102 I have not departed from your laws,
for you yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.

Psalm 119:97-104 (NIV)
