Going Global – Fourth Sunday after Pentecost [7/7/19]

Today’s Passage:  Psalm 66

Opening Prayer:  Father God, worship is not about us; it is about You.  It is not just a personal thing.  It is about the whole town, the whole community, the whole nation, and the whole global community.  It is for, and about, all people.  May we see worship in a much broader way.  May we see worshiping You as something that is a part of everything we do.   May we bless and worship You with, and through, our lives.  In Jesus’ name I pray.  Amen.

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]: Going Global – Fourth Sunday after Pentecost by Will Willimon, a bishop in the United Methodist Church and Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School.
You would expect Psalm 66 to invite Israel, God’s chosen people, to praise the Lord, but in a surprisingly magnanimous gesture the psalmist invites the whole earth to praise the God of Israel.  Listen as Will Willimon reflects on the generosity of the psalmist, and the God he praises.

Closing Song:  Tauren Wells – When We Pray (Official Music Video)

Closing Prayer:  Father God, we know You have chosen the Church, Christ’s Church, as the way to present You to the whole world.  We, as Christians and members of Christ’s Church, are often awed by that reality.  Sometimes we might even question the wisdom of You using us, as flawed, weak and lacking as we may be.  However, we know that is Your plan.  May we, through Christ and with the power of the Holy Spirit, step up to that call.  May we join You wherever You are and wherever You have called us to, to do Your will in that place.  In the name of Your Son, Jesus, I pray.  Amen.

Epilogue:  We Are Messengers – “Magnify” (Official Music Video)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/7/19]

Makes sense to me.  How about you?

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently.  But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.  Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.  If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.  Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.  Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.

Galatians 6:1-6 (NIV)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/6/19]

Just as the disciples were sent out by Jesus, we too as Christians are being sent.  May the Holy Spirit be our guide.  In the name of Jesus, I pray, and all to the glory of the Father.  Amen.

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.
Luke 9:1-6

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/5/19]

Do you ever wonder why you do some of the things you do?  Sometimes it is hard to do the things we know we should do.  May we put our trust in the work of Jesus.  In His name, I pray.  Amen.

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Romans 7:15-20, 24-25 (NIV)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/4/19]

And why would we think we would be treated any better than Jesus or His disciples?  Consider this.  What might it mean to you and your life?

I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
Matthew 10:16-20, 22 (NIV)
