“When Religion Makes Things Worse” – Trinity Sunday [6/16/19]

Today’s Passage:  John 3:1-17

Opening Prayer: Today is referred to as Trinity Sunday.  It is a day to recognize and celebrate the Holy Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Father God, may we be touched in a special way today.  Such a mystery is found in the Trinity.  May the nature of the Trinity be fully revealed to us today.  This I pray, in the name of Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit, and all to the glory to the heavenly Father.  Amen.

Opening Song: Newsboys – We Believe (Official Music Video)

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]:  “When Religion Makes Things Worse” by Jim Somerville, pastor of Richmond’s First Baptist Church and co-founder of A Sermon for Every Sunday.
Is your conception of God radically true? Is the [tree] trunk straight, the limbs strong, the branches full of good fruit? It’s a question I’d like every Christian to consider,” begins Jim Somerville.  He continues, “How can we be absolutely, positively, one hundred percent certain that our conception of God is true and not false?…I think that’s the question that got Nicodemus out of bed in the middle of the night.” What can we learn from Nicodemus in John 3: 1-17? Listen as Somerville explains how we can be sure that our conception of God is true.

Closing Song: This I Believe (The Creed) – Hillsong Worship

Closing Prayer: Father God, may our understanding of You, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit be radically true.  As we draw closer to Jesus, may we grow faithfully in this truth.  May our steps be guided by the Holy Spirit.  May the fruit we bear point directly to You.  May we also work tirelessly to advance Your kingdom.  In the name of Jesus, I pray.  Amen.
