Without patience we will learn less in life. We will see less. We will feel less. We will hear less. Ironically, rush and more usually mean less. – Mother Teresa

Without patience we will learn less in life. We will see less. We will feel less. We will hear less. Ironically, rush and more usually mean less. – Mother Teresa
Today’s Passage: John 14:8-17
Opening Prayer: Holy Spirit, come. Make Your presence known. Fill us to overflowing. May You open our hearts, minds, and spirit to the Truth. May the Truth guide us, mold us, and change us to be more like Christ. In the name of Jesus, I pray, to the glory of God. Amen.

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]: “What Does the Spirit Do?” a Sermon for the Day of Pentecost by Will Willimon, a retired bishop in the United Methodist Church, a powerful preacher, and a prolific author.
Will Willimon preaches the Gospel text for Pentecost Sunday from John 14:8-17, and asks the question: “How do we get to know God?” Through Jesus! “How do we continue getting to know God and God’s will for us and the world?” Through the Holy Spirit! But what does the Holy Spirit do? Listen as Willimon unpacks this passage and shares with us the good news that we are not alone in this world!

Today, we celebrate Pentecost.
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4 (NIV)
Peter explains, according to the prophet Joel:
In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved. Acts 2:17-21 (NIV)
Passage: Acts 2:1-21
Father, our pride is our downfall. We want to be right and to win every battle. Help us to understand that patience is Your gift for us and that is far more important to You. Amen.
He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Luke 1:14-17 (NIV)
What proud parents Zechariah and Elizabeth must have been to know the positive impact their child would have on people and a nation. It must have been an honor for them to know that their son would prepare the way for the Lord. Father God, may we see the potential good that others are capable of doing. May we support those we can to step into the roles God has placed before them. Inn Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Passage: Luke 1:5-17
Ecclesiastes 7:8 (NIV)
The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:7-10 (NIV)
Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting. – Joyce Meyer
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:16-25 (NIV)
Father, we ask that You give us more and more wisdom so that we might see how to overlook an offense. Less of ourselves and more of You, Father God. Amen.
